A Beach Run at Golden Hour

There is something about the beach at golden hour I never get tired of. The light turns everything warm and honey-colored, the waves roll in, and the sand still holds the heat of the day. A beach run is my favorite reset, the kind where the only thing on my mind is the next step and salt in the air. I grabbed my red bikini, headed down to the water, and ran.

I caught a little of it on video so you could come along, a short clip of my beach run as the sun started dropping. Fair warning, it is the kind of day that will make you want to book a flight somewhere warm.

Why beach running is worth the extra effort

Running on sand works your legs harder than a road because the surface gives way under each step, so you use more muscles just to stay steady. It is gentler on the joints in one way yet tougher on the calves in another. That makes it a great change-up, not an everyday replacement. The tradeoff is a better workout and a view you cannot get on a treadmill.

The best time to run on the beach

Early morning and late afternoon are the sweet spots because the sand is cooler and the light is friendlier. Midday is the toughest, hottest, and brightest time, which is why a golden-hour run feels so good. You get soft light, a cooler breeze off the water, and the beach mostly to yourself.

Barefoot or shoes, the honest take

Some barefoot running on firm, wet sand feels great and builds strength in your feet, but you should ease into it. The dry, loose sand near the shore is unstable and pulls on your calves. My honest advice is to start with shoes on, add a little barefoot time once you are used to it, and stop if anything aches sharply.
